Building the IEP

Are my child's IEP goals measurable?

Reviewed by Dr. Elizabeth Long, Ph.D. — Director of Special Education, 32 years in public schools.

A measurable goal should make it possible to determine whether progress is occurring and how much progress is being made. Ask:

  • What exactly is my child expected to do?
  • Under what conditions?
  • How will it be measured?
  • What data will be collected?
  • How often will progress be reported?
  • What will demonstrate mastery?
