Sensory Strategies at School

Do sensory strategies require a formal diagnosis?

Reviewed by Dr. Elizabeth Long, Ph.D. — Director of Special Education, 32 years in public schools.

No. A school-based occupational therapist can assess sensory processing as part of an educational evaluation regardless of an outside diagnosis. As with other related services, eligibility for school-based sensory support is based on educational impact, not a diagnosis alone.
