Individual Health Plans (IHPs): What Parents Need to Know — Parent Q&A

Does my child need an IHP if they already have a 504 plan or IEP?

Reviewed by Dr. Elizabeth Long, Ph.D. — Director of Special Education, 32 years in public schools.

Not automatically — it depends on day-to-day needs. A 504 or IEP might reference a health condition and general accommodations, but typically isn't written to cover specific medical/nursing details (exact dosing and timing, step-by-step emergency response, what triggers immediate nurse involvement). An IHP fills that gap — it's the document staff and the nurse reference in the moment: "if this happens, do this."
