Testing Accommodations: ACT, SAT, and State Summative Assessments — Parent Q&A

Do my child's everyday school accommodations automatically apply to the ACT or SAT?

Reviewed by Dr. Elizabeth Long, Ph.D. — Director of Special Education, 32 years in public schools.

No. This is the single biggest misconception families run into: accommodations your child uses daily at school do not automatically transfer to the ACT or SAT. Having a current IEP or 504 plan does not guarantee approval of accommodations for these exams — the final decision belongs to College Board and ACT, not the school.

Same Team framing: Think of the IEP/504 as strong evidence for the outside request, not the request itself. The school and family still have to actively build and submit a separate application together.
