Students with ODD and DMDD: How This Is Addressed in the IEP — Parent Q&A

What services should be on the table for extreme aggression or maladaptive behavior?

Reviewed by Dr. Elizabeth Long, Ph.D. — Director of Special Education, 32 years in public schools.

Assessment/planning: a comprehensive FBA (ideally by a school psychologist or BCBA), a crisis/safety plan embedded in the BIP, and consideration of a psychiatric/psychological evaluation. Direct services: individual counseling/therapy at school focused on the driving skills, behavioral consultation or direct support from a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), social skills instruction, an increased staff-to-student ratio or a dedicated trained paraprofessional, and case management/coordination with outside providers. If the team is only offering "more of the same" after a real escalation, ask: "What's actually changing about the level or intensity of support, given that the current plan isn't working?"
